April is American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(ASPCA) prevention of animal cruelty month. Animal cruelty is the mistreatment of both wild and domestic animals. The main reason animals are abused is because the owners do not get information on how to properly take care of their pet before purchasing them, but there are various other forms of animal abuse to which people need to bring more attention.

Animal fighting is most likely performed by dogs. Pit Bulls are especially used fighting because they were originally bred for biting and holding bulls and other large animals. This causes for many dogs to be dangerous and develop aggressive behavior toward other animals that are not being forced to fight with them and toward people. Pit Bulls are great family dogs but because of how often they are trained to be fighting dogs (they are considered dangerous). It is considered a felony in Tennessee to participate in organized animal fighting for amusement and/or profit. To prevent further animal fighting, be on the lookout for many animals that have been chained up or isolated, as well as scars and cuts on animals.

A place where animals get extremely mistreated without people knowing is the circus. Circus cruelty is very common but hardly ever talked about because all that is seen are the amazing tricks that the animals are taught and not what goes on behind closed doors. Circus animals are usually trained by using extreme discipline, whipping, hitting and being shocked with metal pods. In addition, 96% of circus animals’ lives are spent in cages. Most animals in a circus are wild animals that would not typically be kept as pets. These types of animals need space to live and to feel like they are in their natural habitat. These animals are also locked in cages for long periods of time, not only for discipline, but for traveling far distances as well.

Animals need space to feel free and not confined. There are people who have many domestic animals, but do not have the space to properly take care of them or are not in the correct living condition to have that many animals. In the U.S, animal hoarders are prosecuted if they fail to provide a certain level of animal care. To prevent animal hoarding and further animal abuse, be sure to get information on the animal being purchased and be on the lookout for people who may show signs of mistreatment towards their animals.
