Unfortunately, not all our days are merry and bright during the holiday season. In 1929 on Christmas Day, the Lawson family was murdered by the family patriarch, Charlie Lawson. The Lawsons had eight children, four girls and four boys. The third-born child, William Lawson, had died from an illness in 1920. The Lawsons worked as tobacco farmers. The tobacco barn that they owned was where Charlie Lawson had hidden his evidence. He first shot wo daughters outside the barn. Then repeatedly beat them to be sure they were dead. Afterwards, Lawson returned to his house and shot his wife who was sitting on the porch. He went inside the house and shot his third daughter, his two sons, and then his baby girl. His 16-year-old son Arthur was the only one who survived because he was sent to run an errand. After he murdered his family, Charlie Lawson wrote letters to his parents and then shot himself.

There are many theories to why Charlie Lawson had killed his family. Some say it’s because he had taken a hit to the head a few days prior to the murder and that made him insane. Others claim it was because of an incestuous relationship between the daughter, Marie, and Charlie Lawson. It is rumored that his wife Fannie Lawson had been suspicious about the relationship between Marie and Charlie. A close friend of Marie’s, Ella May claimed that weeks prior to the murder Marie had told her she was pregnant with her father’s baby, and that her mother and father knew. A neighbor of the Lawson’s claimed that he knew of serious issues going on in the family but he had refused to give anymore information.
